I have been using vi/vim for about six years, but had never gotten to the next level. This was mainly because I had kept my usage limited to a small subset of vi (which is even smaller for vim). And it's not just me - I have seen many people who use vi this way. The other reason is the fact that vi has a steep learning curve. And even when you learn something new, you have to use it often, as otherwise there is a good chance that you will forget it. I knew how powerful vi can be as a text editor, but somehow never used it to its full potential. Sometimes I used to search on the internet for vi/vim tips and stuff, and finally realized that all this learning will be much more effective if I have a book that has all the information in one place. I guess most people will think twice before buying a book on a text editor (at least, I did), whereas they won't hesitate if it was a book on a programming language. But an editor like vi, which is quite difficult to master, does need a book. Once you learn it, you will be amazed to see how powerful it is.About the book, it is perhaps the best resource for someone at the beginner/intermediate level to learn about vi. There are not many books around on the subject, but this book does a great job. It is divided into two parts. The first part teaches vi and the second part talks about a few vi clones (including vim). The book (especially the first part) is organized in a very nice way. Things are presented in a certain order. Each chapter/section builds on the previous chapter/section. The second part deals with different clones of vi, like nvi, elvis, vim and vile. Of these, I use only vim, which is basically is superset of vi. The chapter on vim does a good job of discussing the essential features of vim in some details, although its not complete by any means. With vim having such a huge number of features, it demands a separate book for itself.All in all, this is a great book. It is a worthwhile investment to make. You will end up doing things in minimum time and with just a few keystrokes. As another reviewer has said, vi is addicting. Use it and you will see for yourself!

Although this is the 6th edition of this book, while I was reading it, I still felt like I was reading the first edition, due to the clunky prose and the treatment of the material.I know the authors feel compelled to write a book that describes the features of vi that are common on all platforms, but they end up producing a manual that appeals to the lowest common denominator. If you are still editing files on an old Unix machine using minicom and a dial-up link, this book is just right for you. If you are a modern vi user, trying to edit a large Linux project and need to learn some of the more powerful features of vim, you may be better off asking the office vi guru.The community at large would be better served by a book dedicated to vim that does not have the problems of "Vi iMproved (VIM)" by Steve Oualline.

This book is well written and laid out. Whether or not you are a beginner or advanced user coming to vi, this is a valuable tool for getting the most out of vi.vi is by no means an easy or intuitive editor, but with a little practice, it can greatly improve your efficiency. The book does a great job of taking you through a logical progression of how to start using the product.Also, the support for the derivatives of vi is a huge plus. The vim chapter is excellent and I learned several tips and trick that I now use on a daily basis.As usual, O'Reilly hits another one out of the park.

About the Author
Jaswant Singh (born 3 January 1938) is an Indian politician. He is from the Indian State of Rajasthan and was an officer in the Indian Army in the 1960s. He served as Finance minister in the short-lived government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which lasted just from 16 May 1996, to 1 June 1996. After Vajpayee became Prime Minister again two years later, he became Minister for External Affairs of India, serving from 5 Dec. 1958 until 1 July 2002. Responsible for the foreign policy, he dealt with high tensions between India and Pakistan. In July 2002, he became Finance Minister again, switching posts with Yashwant Sinha. He served as Finance Minister until the defeat of the Vajpayee government in May 2004 and was instrumental in defining and pushing through the market-friendly reforms of the government. Known for his moderate political views, he is a self-described liberal democrat even though the Bharatiya Janata Party is often described as a right-wing nationalist organization. He was conferred the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for the year 2001. On 19 August 2009, he was expelled from BJP after criticism over his remarks in this book.

It will be the first  book to document more than 200 of the most important medicinal plants of Central Asia, many whose medicinal uses and activities are being described in English for the first time.  The majority of the plants described grow wild in Central Asia with some being endemic, while other species have been introduced to Central Asia but are commonly used in regional plant based medicine.
 
The book contains four introductory chapters. The first and second chapters cover the geography, climate and vegetation of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, respectively. The third chapter provides a brief history of medicinal plant use and science in Central Asia and the fourth chapter contains general information about phytochemistry. The fifth chapter comprises the bulk of the book and covers 208 medicinal plant species. Nearly all species have one or more high quality, color photographs.
 
Three useful appendices have been included. The first is a glossary of botanical and ecological terms, the second is a glossary of chemistry terms and the third is a glossary of medical terms. During the preparation of this manuscript we found there to be a deficiency in quality reference resources for the translation of many of the technical terms associated with the different branches of science covered in this book. In order to make our job easier we compiled glossaries over the course of preparing the manuscript and have included them feeling that they will be an extremely valuable resource for readers.

 Medicinal Plants of Central Asia: Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan is the first English-language book detailing medicinal plant diversity in the region. More than two hundred of the most important medicinal plants of Central Asia are listed and it includes many whose medicinal uses and activities are being compiled for the first time.  Information on the taxonomy, morphology, ecology, ethnobotany, chemistry, and pharmacology of plants from this region are presented with hundreds of beautiful color photographs. The book is co-authored by scientists from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and the U.S. and draws upon a rich source of local knowledge. The extensive English-Russian linguistic glossary to ecological, botanical, chemical, and medical terms is the first of its kind for this type of book.

 Dr. Sasha Eisenman received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University. He is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture at Temple University. His research focuses on chemical and genetic variation in medicinal plants, conservation genetics of rare species, and investigating underutilized plant species.

Dr. David Zaurov received his Ph.D. from the Tashkent Agricultural Institute, USSR and since 1992 he has worked in various capacities at Rutgers University, including as a faculty member in the Plant Biology Department. He is the author of nearly 100 research articles and 3 textbooks. In 1998, he was acknowledged as an Honorary Professor of Tashkent State Agrarian University, the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Dr. Lena Struwe is an Associate Professor and Director of the Chrysler Herbarium at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, and has over 25 years of research and teaching experience in the fields of botany and medicinal plants.  Her expertise is in the evolution and taxonomy of gentians, anti-malarial plants, and the ways in which humans have used plants throughout history.

About the Author
Lena Struwe is a Research Associate in The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Program for Molecular Systematics Studies at the Institute of Systematic Botany, New York Botanical Garden. Her main research interests are the evolution and biogeography of the Gentianaceae, and also the order Gentianales, specifically the families Loganiaceae and Gelsemiaceae.

5 starsThis was such a fun book to read. It was a 'Goonies' adventure mixed with a 'National Treasure' mystery. I highly recommend this for all kids and adults alike. Laura Ruby really has a grasp on how children think and behave and she created a magical world that is bursting with imagination and mystery. I love the vocabulary she used and how she seamlessly worked the explanation of a thing into the story. Her characters were so real and even the cat was so realistic. Though the world is so different from our reality, it too felt real. I just loved this book and urge parents to buy it for their children.

THIS BOOK, YOU GUYS. I'm extremely pleased to say that this book lived up to it's gorgeous cover, it's fascinating premise, and the amazing writing that the incomparable Laura Ruby has delivered in the past. Honestly, I got Harry Potter feels from this one. It was charming, smart, and fun. Not only are the characters real but the world sucks you in and drags you happily around like Nine (the cat) does with a sock. I loved this book with all my heart and I'm 25. I'm not going to stop recommending this for a while and will be anxiously waiting for the sequel and the movies and the movie sequels because I have a feeling that it's going to be huge. This is a must-read for everyone over the age of seven or eight and I hope it's passed around in families and talked about because it's just too good to be ignored. Buy and share!

This book had its main focus on this old puzzle called the Cipher, which was designed by the Morningstarrs, this genius twin pair, brother and sister. They invented many things, and designed the Morningstarr Tower, which has many elevators that move in all directions. The Morningstarrs, along with their employees had secrets and basically lived under the radar.In this book, three kids try to solve the Cipher. The kids were Tess and Theo, brother and sister. Both really smart. Jaime. The artist. Smart. Finally, Nine, the cat that needs a leash. Slightly crazy. Together, these people, (plus cat) are kind of brought closer to each other because a powerful man named Darrell Slant bought their apartment building.My opinion? I think that this book was really great. If you like solving puzzles and challenging your brain, you would really LOVE this book. This book had what I like to read about. Action, personality, detail, scary moments, bonding, and, frankly, too many other things to list. You need to read York: The Shadow Cipher!!! Thank you for writing this book Laura Ruby <3
