These books are the bane of my existence. I am an avid reader and I absolutely hated cracking these open. The literature is, of course, great, however, the print is SO tiny and crammed onto the page that it sucks all of the enjoyment out of reading. This set is an overpriced visual torture device and I pity anyone whose English professor requires this as a text. My American lit professor was one such sadistic educator. I can't believe I paid $70 to hate something. As a tip, all of the writings in these books are readily available on the internet, where they are much easier to read.
I need this anthology for an upcoming lit class, but I was a little filled with trepidation to buy it when I read a review saying how very small the font type is and how hard it is to read. I wasn't sure my 40 year old eyes would be up to the task. But when I cracked the book open, it was just a normal book with acceptable sized typeface. I'm not sure why another reviewer was whining about how small the type is, but it's totally fine. I bought my copy used but fulfilled by Amazon and it's fine. It's a very heavy paperback and I wish I could have found it in ebook format. I'm glad I am a fully online student and I don't have to haul this thing around in my backpack, that's for sure.
DO NOT GET! I only received volume B of this text and was told there was nothing they could do.
This book is a great collection of American literature writings. I have enjoyed this book so much because it has given me an insight to what being American is all about. For example, it contains Hector Crevecoeur's, "Letters from an American Farmer" In it you will find his description of, "What is an American". This and many more other important writings make this book very valuable. I highly recommend it.
Required book for a college course that is now requiring a new book to be purchased with a one-time-use access code. It seems that publishers are finding new ways to avoid sustainability and circumvent the used book market by making colleges assign these new book bundles. I am glad that some professors allow students to choose whether or not they want to buy the bundle, which includes some extras including study guides, or opt out and buy/rent the used books and save money. At NVCC in Manassas, every class this semester "required" the access code bundles at $150-278 a book. Multiply that by 6 classes and you get a cost-prohibitive situation for most students. I was glad that find this book as an inexpensive rental, and I'll go the extra mile and scour the book for my answers and make my own study guide. If it costs me a half a grade or more, it may be worth it to be able to afford college.
The book was basically falling apart when it came in the mail. It literally looked like someone chewed it up and spat it back out. However, because it was cheap and I needed it for school I continued to rent it. it anyway. As the semester went on the pages of the book started to detach from the spine of the book! If anyone wants to rent this book, just be sure to rent it like new.
This is a large anthology with a lot of material. The beginning chapters/stories are hard to get through because of the colonial language and material, but it gets better as the book goes along.
Required for college English class. Thin pages, but what do you expect when you have so much information in such a small book. Earlier books (1970s-1980s) were hardback and a lot heavier. This one beats that out. From what I understand on Pearson's website, an e-book is in the works. That would be so great for students who could load it on a tablet or computer and not carry multiple books to class.
