Indeed, this is the best biography yet of the man Jefferson called "the helmsman of the American Revolution." Alexander's extensive research supports his view that Adams, "more than anybody, consistently and ardently worked to convince Americans of the need for independence" and kept the revolutionary movement alive during the critical early 1770s. Alexander (Univ. of Cincinnati) considers Adams the US's first "modern politician" in that he made politics his lifelong occupation, grasped the political power of the media, and linked the towns of Massachusetts through committees of correspondence that ultimately became an effective intercolonial communications network. Adams has been eclipsed in US public memory by more famous founding fathers; many remember him now primarily as the fellow who brewed beer. But Alexander makes the case that Adams was one of the most significant of the country's founders and did as much as anyone to build an American republic dedicated to liberty and equality. He was a brilliant organizer or an unprincipled manipulator. Alexander gratifyingly avoids the pitfalls of easy categorization. Still, in a generally admiring biography, he convincingly asserts two consistent aspects of Adams' career. First, he was a political animal, who felt most alive when organizing, negotiating, and when necessary, compromising to achieve his goals. Second, he was a true revolutionary, who viewed the arena of politics as a means for transforming American society in accordance with republican principles. His hopes extended beyond simple independence from Britain. Within those parameters, Alexander examines Adams' activities during and after the revolution as he dealt with a variety of issues, including slavery, the rights of women, and foreign affairs. I bought this as a reference while working as a field engineer for offshore support vessels. It gives you a good understanding of ship design and how vessels and their cargo will react based on wave amplitude, frequency, etc. Definitely a good read and the printed pages included were awesome.

Condition of the book was better than expected and the book itself is helpful for anyone looking into naval architecture and it is a simple read with easy to understand examples.

I am a Mechanical Engineer looking at ship design. This book looks to be an excellent resource beyond the fluid dynamics courses I had in college.

The information is through and I assune somewhat complete, if you plan to do a reconstruction of the aircraft carrier Nimitz or may older issues such as the Enterprise. However for anything under 250 feet, the book is virtually not applicable. I am currently refitting a 40' aftcabin crusier that is mahogany and oak. I was hoping to find information on newer reconstruction methods however, this book only deals in theory pertaining to large vessels and classical construction methodology.

With the possible exception of SNAME's "Principles of Naval Architecture," "Introduction to Naval Architecture" is the perfect introductory text for any naval architecture/marine engineering student. It includes brief but dense overviews of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, ship structure, resistance, and propulsion. While there are more detailed texts for each of the above topics (again, SNAME's PNA does a good job as a reference, but not so much as a text, and Harvald's "Resistance and Propulsion of Ships" is THE text for that topic), it is the perfect source for equations, derivations, illustrations, graphs, and, most importantly, example problems. It's very hard to find any clear examples of NA problems in most texts - the examples in this book are worked through step by step, which makes comprehension a breeze. If you're studying or working in the field of naval architecture, this book is a necessary addition to your reference library.

"Introduction to Naval Architecture" provides a unique approach to ship design. Although this approach is quantitative and mathematically "intense", Gillmer also provides qualitative description within certain chapters. Ultimately, for the purposes of clarity and a definitive understanding of basic ship design, this work is best coupled with "Introduction to Naval Architecture" (E.C. Tupper), which provides a "descriptive" perspective. The Gillmer and Johnson referenece is highly recommended for those individuals who have prior knowledge of naval architecture, and a strong foundation in mathematics; otherwise, the aforementioned coupling of two references becomes necessary.Please note: This is my opinion as a high school Senior completing an independent research project within the field of naval architecture.

This is a great text for everyone. I think Zubaly's Applied Naval Architecture does a slightly better job in presenting the coefficients, but in every other respect, this text is superior. Zubaly and this text are weak in the details of seakeeping, but there are several other specific seakeeping texts, namely Dynamics of Marine Vehicles by Battacharia (I know I misspelled his name)

This book is great for starters in Naval Architecture and Engineering.I am a Naval Engineering Student and usually borrow this book from the library. But I liked it so much that I bought it for me to have one at home.There is introduction about stability, resistance of material, etc.

About the Author
Douglas Kenney and Henry Beard wrote Bored of the Rings before going on to form the Harvard Lampoon. It and its successor, The National Lampoon, became cultural institutions in the USA. A.R.R.R. Roberts is also Adam Roberts, Reader in English at Royal Holloway, University of London and author of several acclaimed SF novels. The Harvard Lampoon was essentially Douglas Kenney and Henry Beard. They wrote Bored of the Rings when they were students at Harvard. They then went on to form the National Lampoon, a satirical institution in the 70s. Kenney died in 1980, Beard lives in the Hamptons in the USA.

About the Author

Jean Tabaka is an Agile Coach with Rally Software Development, specializing in creating, coaching, and mentoring collaborative, agile software teams. Jean brings over 25 years of experience in software development to the agile plate in a variety of organizational contexts including internal IT departments, ISVs, government agencies, and consulting organizations. Having implemented both plan-driven and agile development approaches for Sybase, Siebel Systems, and Qwest, as well as a variety of smaller ventures, her work has spanned industries and continents. As an agile mentor, Jean coaches software teams through training and facilitation to adopt agile principles and practices using a hybrid of the leading agile methods. With a passion for collaboration practices through facilitation techniques, she guides organizations in creating high-performance teams. She is the co-author of Physical Database Design for Sybase SQL Server (Prentice Hall, 1995) and is a frequent lecturer and contributor on the topic of collaboration practices in agile teams. As I move from an engineering role into more of a leadership role, this is the first book I've read on facilitation, and it has become a valuable resource in my tool box. As one reviewer said, some of the information provided could be considered obvious; and I would add "unless it's not obvious for somebody new to facilitation". Good book to have on your shelf if you're in a servant-leadership position, like a Scrum Master or an Agile Coach.

This book stands out as one of my favorites on how to really build collaborative teams, and to build consensus. It is full of real-world examples and specific techniques. This is a hard topic to tackle, and I believe that the authors write from experience.The techniques in this book are not just for "Agile" project managers. They can be applied to many different teams on how to facilitate and develop collaboration in meetings, better decisions through consensus, and generally gain team commitment.

Tabaka's book is part of an ongoing series on the use of the Agile software development process. It deals with a key idea of involving participants to the fullest extent. The word collaboration is used to describe this idea. The book is directed at someone who has to manage this process. Someone in a supervisory capacity. Though of course the book could be usefully read by anyone else involved.The book has many suggestions. About such tasks as conducting status meetings during the project. Or how to distinguish between a good meeting and a bad meeting. Or supervising small group work. The advice is entirely about the human element. And not about any specific software tools or languages. If you are a supervisor from a programming background, it could be the human element aspects that you are most in need of advice about.Naturally, the text also has numerous instances of how to deal with what it calls Agile Practices. Yet you might not need to adhere to the latter to still derive gain from the book. There is no need to buy into some or indeed any of the Agile Practices. Much of the book has useful advice (like the example above of the good and bad meetings) that is germane to whatever overarching development process you already have in place. Er, you do have one in place, don't you?

About the Author Jane Piper Clendinning is professor of music theory at the Florida State University College of Music. She has published in the areas of music cognition, music theory pedagogy, theory and analysis of atonal music, contour theory, history of theory, and analysis and performance. She is past president of the Society for Music Theory and is currently co-chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee. Marvin is the 2012 recipient of the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music Theory Teaching and Scholarship.
